How to take care of cashmere: essential care tips to keep your garment lasting a lifetime.
Cashmere is one of the most noble and precious fibers at the heart of Fedeli’s Collections. This four-seasons fiber is remarkably light, naturally breathable, and offers unparalleled thermoregulation. As every precious thing, cashmere fibers need care and attention to make them last forever. To preserve the beauty and longevity of your treasured cashmere pieces, a dedicated care routine is essential. With proper maintenance, your cashmere garment will not only stand the test of time, but it will also enhance its softness and shape after every wash.
Why is caring for cashmere essential?
Although cashmere is known for its luxurious softness and delicate texture, it is also highly
durable when cared for correctly. A well-maintained cashmere garment can last a lifetime, developing an even softer feel over time. Our high-quality cashmere flourishes with every wash, maintaining its fit and elegance for years to come.
How to take care of your cashmere sweater
Washing
The first and most important step in cashmere care is washing. Contrary to common belief,
cashmere benefits from regular washing, which helps the fibers remain flexible and pure.
● How often? Ideally, after four wears
● Water temperature: always use medium warm water (around 30°C) to avoid
weakening the fibers
● Detergent: a small amount of gentle detergent is sufficient. Avoid softeners, as they
coat the fibers and diminish cashmere’s natural softness
● Hand-wash or machine-wash? Both methods work, but if using a machine, select a
delicate cycle and place the garment in a protective laundry bag
● Drying: never wring or twist the sweater. Instead, gently press out excess water
using a clean towel, then lay it flat to dry, reshaping it as necessary
Avoiding pilling
Pilling is a natural process and not an indication of low quality. It occurs due to the inherent
softness of shorter fibers within the weave. With proper care, pilling decreases over time.
● Use a natural bristle cashmere brush to gently remove pills, always brushing from
bottom to top to maintain the integrity of the knit
● Regular washing and maintenance will help excess fibers shed naturally, leaving
your sweater even softer and smoother
How to take care of your cashmere scarf
For scarves like our iconic Yeti cashmere scarf, designed for all seasons, a little extra care helps ensure their longevity.
● Hand-wash is preferred, using cold water to reduce friction and prevent pilling
● The freezing method: after washing, place the damp scarf in a freezer bag and
leave it in the freezer for one to two hours. This helps tighten the fibers, reducing
pilling and preserving the scarf’s airy softness
● Storage: due to its featherlight structure, avoid hanging the scarf on hooks, as this
could cause stretching. Instead, fold it with care and store it in a cool, dark place,
ideally with a natural anti-moth cedar wood.
Common mistakes to avoid when taking care of cashmere
There are some general mistakes that we make when we handle cashmere garments:
● Never hang cashmere garments to dry, as the weight of the water can stretch the
fibers
● Avoid excessive detergent and softeners, which can coat the fibers and strip away
their natural properties
● Store cashmere correctly: keep it folded in a drawer or breathable storage bag,
ideally with cedar wood balls to protect against moths
● Shield from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure to UV rays may cause
discoloration that cannot be reversed
Caring for your cashmere is an act of respect for its quality, ensuring that each piece
remains as refined as the day you first wore it.
